Chelsea beat Southampton on penalties in the EFL Cup.
It was not an easy night for the Blues as Southampton held them to a draw in Stamford bridge. Chelsea beat the visitors 4-3 on penalties to progress into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
In what seemed like a tough game for both teams, many of Thomas Tuchel’s fringe players failed to nail or put in so much work in impressing the coach, though Saul Niguez looks promising. Only Kai Havertz who scored their goal with a header on the stroke of half-time, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Trevoh Chalobah (who has emerged as a genuine first-team option anyway) looked impressive, although a case could be made for Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Che Adams leveled three minutes into the second-half and it was largely the away side who had the better of it towards the end, with the Spanish keeper pulling off two important saves in the final minute to keep his side in it.
It was not an easy evening’s work for Chelsea but the Blues have got over the line once again in the Carabao Cup thanks to another penalty shootout victory. Mason Mount was the only man to miss from the spot for Chelsea, but it didn’t prove costly as Alonso, Hudson-Odoi, Chilwell, and Reece James all struck the back of the net.
