Chelsea deservedly beat Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.

Chelsea took the lead in the first minute when Kai Havertz pounced on a through ball from Marcos Alonso and fired home despite Davinson Sanchez’s heroics.

In the 34th minute, Japhet Tanganga headed the ball into the back of teammate Ben Davies’ shoulder, which sent the ball flying into the goal.

After serving a one-game suspension for statements he made in an interview, Romelu Lukaku returned to the club and had many chances, one of which he missed with a close-range header.

With Spurs down 2-0 in the first half, they were forced to wait until the 50th minute for a shot, with Harry Kane’s free-kick being saved by Kepa in the process.

Hugo Lloris made several saves, including ones from Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech, and Timo Werner, who was making his comeback.

For Tottenham to stand a hope of reaching Wembley, they will have to perform significantly better in the second leg next week.

Liverpool vs Arsenal’s Carabao Cup fixture has been postponed as a result of new COVID-19 cases in the Liverpool squad.
