Dortmund youngster involved in police investigation, could face criminal charges

The German Football Association are looking into Jude Bellingham’s post-match comments  after Borussia Dortmund’s loss to Bayern Munich on Saturday night, and the youngster could be suspended as a result.

Bellingham launched a scathing verbal attack on referee Felix Zwayer after he awarded Bayern a controversial match winning penalty in the 3-2 Klassiker thriller on Saturday evening.

Angered by the decision, the 18-year-old went on an extraordinary post-match rant in which he said: “Well for me it wasn’t [a penalty] you know.

“He [Mats Hummels] is not even looking at the ball and he’s fighting to get it.

“It hits him and I don’t even think he’s looking at the ball but you know you can look at a lot of the decisions in the game.’

“You give a referee that has match-fixed before, the biggest game in Germany what do you expect?”

The allegation Bellingham referred to related to referee Zwayer being banned for six months after accepting a bribe from fellow referee Robert Hoyzer during a betting and match fixing scandal which happened in 2005.

Zwayer eventually returned after the German FA were satisfied he has suffered a sufficient punishment and has officiated games ever since.

But according to German newspaper outlet Bild, the DFB Control Committee are investigating Jude Bellingham, which could potentially lead to the Englishman being fined, or in the worst case scenario, even a lengthy suspension.

Bild claims that a voluntary observer for the DFB has also filed criminal charges against Jude and the referee Manuel Gräfe, who was also very critical of Zwayer’s efforts. The criminal offense is apparently “insult, defamation, and slander”.

Borussia Dortmund said on Sunday that they would stand by the England midfielder. “The boy is 18 years old and was speaking after a heated and emotional game. We will stand by him,”

A criminal complaint has now been filed and the case will be forwarded to the Dortmund public prosecutor’s office who will determine whether there will be any criminal charges against Bellingham with a decision expected later on this week.
