Liverpool defeats Southampton 4-0 to close the gap on league leaders Chelsea as Diogo Jota scores a brace at Anfield. Liverpool beat Southampton 4-0 to take second place in the Premier League, one point behind Chelsea.

Liverpool won thanks to a brace from Diogo Jota and goals from Thiago Alcantara and Virgil van Dijk comfortably.

Southampton’s audacity was rewarded less than two minutes later, as Andrew Robertson was allowed to break down the flank and cross for Jota to tap in.

The unmarked Jota tapped in from Mohamed Salah’s square pass following brilliant link-up play between the Egypt international and Jordan Henderson shortly after the half-hour mark.

Those two goals brought Liverpool’s total to 700 since Jurgen Klopp’s arrival at Anfield; they are also the first top-flight club in English football to score at least twice in 17 consecutive matches in all competitions since Sunderland 1927.

In 37 minutes, Liverpool scored their third goal after the visitors failed to clear their lines correctly, and Alcantara punished them with a deflected shot, his second in as many games.

The half-time break gave just a little reprieve, and Liverpool made it 4-0 on 52 minutes when Virgil van Dijk blasted in from a corner.

The Reds currently have 28 points, while Chelsea has 29 and will want to expand their advantage with a win over Manchester United on Sunday.
