McTominay’s header helps United see off Aston Villa.
In the Villa six-yard box, McTominay was allowed to run unopposed and meet Fred’s perfectly weighted cross to steer the ball past Emiliano Martinez with ease.
Due to his allegiance to Liverpool, Villa manager Steven Gerrard had to return to Manchester, where he was taunted by the home crowd.
This result was harsh on Gerrard and his teammates as they were condemned with a goal in 8th minute by Scot McTominay’s header.
They had the puck in the United net twice in quick succession early in the second period, but both were disallowed.
Despite the fact that Ollie Watkins had already scored on what should have been an obvious offside against Danny Ings, the flag wasn’t raised until after the goal had been scored.
There was a lengthy wait for VAR to ask referee Michael Oliver to make the final decision by consulting the screen and eventually ruling Jacob Ramsey offside and impeded Edinson Cavani in the build-up.
Also, the game saw Ralf Rangnick sidelining Cristiano Ronaldo who wasn’t even on the bench for the FA Cup tie.
