Weeks ago, when the 30 man Ballon D’or list was revealed, there’s a surprise and not so much talked about the omission from the list, “Edouard Mendy.”
Following his move to Chelsea last season, the Frenchman almost secured his place in the starting line up ahead of the most expensive goalkeeper in world football Kepa Arrizabalaga. He has yet to have a bad game since his move from Ligue 1.
He has always been in top form and has been available for selection the majority of the time to save the team whenever he’s been called upon. In yesterday’s game vs. Brentford, his brilliance won Chelsea three points in a performance that earned him the man of the match. He was the stand-out performer in the game, and you couldn’t take your eyes off him.
“We were solid for 70 minutes and very lucky for 20 minutes, to sum it up. We escaped with the three points thanks to Édouard. [He] was concentrated in the first half; they trouble you with long throws and set pieces. They created big chances, and he was the key to the clean sheet.” Thomas Tuchel; source: BBC
Yesterday’s game was sneak peak of what Edouard Mendy can do. Last season only Ederson had more clean sheets(19) than him (16) in the league despite playing fewer games.
He’s been between the sticks 38 times for Chelsea, has kept 20 massive clean sheets, had only one error leading to a goal, and has made 82 saves, with 22 wins and just eight losses. He was massively involved in Chelsea’s champions league campaign and was named UCL goalkeeper of the season.
This season in PL, he’s maintained a 96.2% save percentage, kept four clean sheets in 7 appearances, conceding only three goals that all came from the set-piece, and had the highest goals prevented (7.24).
The most prestigious trophy in football (Ballon d’Or), according to popular belief, should go to the top players. They have had the most incredible season throughout the competitive year, regardless of race. The most crucial issue, which few people are asking, is why is Mendy not included in the 30 men Ballon d’Or list, and on what grounds and criteria are he being excluded from this prize that is not meant to be biased?
“It is unacceptable. I do not understand,” fumed Mendy’s Senegal teammate Sadio Mane upon hearing the news during the international break. Yes, you can argue that there are other African contenders, but only Riyad Mahrez and Mohamed Salah were included in the list. At the same time, Eduoard Mendy, with the most impressive season, was snubbed.
“There will always be debates, whether it’s about me or Someone else. It is down to the freedom of the votes of the [Ballon d’Or] journalists, and they must be respected.” Mendy said when he was asked about the Ballon D’or’or list.
Mendy evidently prefers to do his talking on the pitch, as he showed everyone on Saturday against Brentford, which is precisely why he should never be overlooked as the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment.
His teammate Antonio Rudiger, who doesn’t waste any time to reflect on how he feels, went to his Twitter and said “Someone explains why he’s not nominated for the balloon D’Or or 🤔🤔🤔 What a performance… EDOUARD MENDY 💪🏾”
The big question now is if there is still racism among football’s elite players, or if this is just another oversight that most goalkeepers encounter.
