Late Morata Goal Helps Spain Secure 2022 World Cup Spot

The clash was tight and so reminiscent of the Euro 2020 game between both sides with Spain in control possession-wise with Sweden looking sharp on the break. A late Morata delivered the relief for Spain fans with the late tap in following a thunderous strike from Olmo which Olsen could only palm onto the bar.

Alvaro Morata’s goal four minutes from time ended Sweden’s resistance in Seville and made sure his team avoided playing in the playoffs in March. Luis Enrique’s men will be grateful for that reprieve as for a long time a repeat of the stalemate between the sides when they met in the group stages of Euro 2020 was on the cards. Morata was the fall guy that night for missing a host of chances, but tonight made his mark off the bench with a calm finish after Robin Olsen had turned Dani Olmo’s blistering shot onto the bar.

“To be honest, it is a huge weight off my shoulders,” said Luis Enrique. “I felt much more pressure in these games when people think it is easier to get a result than in the Euro or the Nations League,” he added.

The Swedes’ shock 2-0 defeat to Kazakhstan on Thursday had handed Spain pole position in Group B, meaning La Roja just needed a point to qualify. And this means they’d have to secure their qualification spot in March provided they win the playoffs games
