EPL: Manchester United’s pristine Premier League start is maintained by a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty in a 1-0 win over Norwich.
As a result of Grant Hanley’s departure, Norwich were dealt an early setback in the loss of their captain. He was later spotted on the sidelines with his arm in a sling, watching the game.
Cristiano Ronaldo gets fouled by Max Aarons and takes a penalty, which he scores past Tim Krul.
To their credit, Norwich create numerous scoring chances in the second half. Since taking over as temporary manager of Manchester United, Ralf Rangnick is undefeated in the league.
Alex Telles’ free kick was pushed onto the crossbar in the first half, a far cry from United’s dazzling performance against Crystal Palace last week
However, Dean Smith’s team dominated the second half as Przemyslaw Placheta, Teemu Pukki, and Josh Sargent all had good chances to win the game.
Victor Lindelof was subbed off after being reported to have breathing difficulties. David de Gea, who made late saves from Ozan Kabak, was named man of the match by Gary Neville. He also kept his 200th career clean sheet.
Manchester United came close in the 14th minute. Tim Krul made a diving save to deflect Telles’ free kick over the crossbar.
Despite a promising start, Norwich received an early injury blow. Adding to Dean Smith’s five changes due to illness, Covid-19 positive tests, and injuries, skipper Hanley injured his shoulder. After a scuffle with Ronaldo down the right, Norwich fans booed the forward for the rest of the game.
But the Canaries left just before half-time. Placheta, making his Premier League debut, dinked the ball past Scott McTominay. His pass found Lukas Rupp, who sent it to Pukki in front, but the ball hit his shin and bounced away from his feet.
