Messi yet to score a League Goal as 10 man PSG Draw Marseille

Lionel Messi was kept quiet for the better part of the game yesterday as ten men Paris Saint Germain had to settle for a draw with fierce rivals Marseille. The atmosphere was a heated one, mostly from the fans as the visiting players were protected from objects thrown at them by the home fans. There was another disrruption in the second half when a young man invaded the pitch and tried to approach Messi, interrupting an attack orchestrated by him before the pitch invader was escorted off the pitch.

In the first half, the game was marked by two disallowed goals by a tight VAR offside call, one an own-goal by Marseille defender Luan Peres and another at the opposite end from Arkadiusz Milik. It was a familiar sight for the Qatar-owned club, who could not get their pace and were later reduced to 10 men when Achraf Hakimi was sent off in the second-half following a VAR review for a last-man challenge on Cengiz Under just outside the box.

The result might be acceptable for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who have lost just one of their 11 games in League 1 this season and are at the top with seven points clear of Lens, who are second in the league. However, the performances of PSG’s attacking side will be questioned as the trio could not find the back of the net again.

The Argentine started Messi, Neymar, and Angel Di Maria in a line of three behind Kylian Mbappe, but that quartet was kept quiet for most of the game by a hard-working Marseille side. Messi was coming up against Jorge Sampaoli, who coached the six-time Ballon d’Or winner at the 2018 World Cup when in charge of Argentina, and who is now in the Marseille stands. Though the former Barcelona man scored twice for his club in their 3-2 win over Leipzig, he rarely looked like himself and finds it hard to score.  In the first half, a close-range header that was tipped over goalkeeper Pau Lopez was the closest Messi came.

His three goals in a PSG shirt have come in the Champions League, while he is yet to score in the French league, even if this was just his fourth Ligue 1 appearance.
