#OleOut: Very alarming news for Chelsea

Although initially receiving backing from the United board following the recent defeat to Leicester City, things now appear to have turned for Solskjaer on a day of reckoning after a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool.

This United squad may have weaknesses but it’s strong enough to be competing at the top of the Premier League table under a coach with greater pedigree than Solskjaer. That is why there may be some concern among the Blues fanbase over one of the candidates on the Reds’ shortlist to replace Solskjaer: Antonio Conte.

#OleOut: Very alarming news for Chelsea

The Italian is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most astute coaches. He has won Serie A with two different clubs – Juventus and Inter Milan – and guided Chelsea to the Premier League title during the first of his two seasons at the helm at Stamford Bridge. Then there is the dark side of Conte. He can be egotistical and unpleasant, demanding and combustible. Yet as a pure coach, there are few better.

If Manchester United were to replace Solskjaer with Conte, there’s no doubt the 52-year-old would drastically improve the Reds. A clear on-pitch structure would be put in place, as would a greater emphasis on working as a collective rather than individuals.

That the Blues have won two European trophies, including the Champions League since letting Conte go in 2018, it’s unlikely they have regrets about their decision. Yet Chelsea and Tuchel harbor ambitions of winning the Premier League title this season. With Conte at the helm at Old Trafford, that would become more difficult.

For the past three seasons, United have stuck to the Solskjaer project. The hope was that with time he could return the Reds to the pinnacle of the English game, make them the dominant force one again. It’s clear now that he can’t. But Conte has the potential to do so. Chelsea know that very well.
