Manchester United have already secured top spot in Group F and as such new manager Ralf Rangnick will likely use tonight’s Champions League clash with Young Boys to feature a number of his lesser used squad players.
The Old Trafford side have a tight fixture list in December and Wednesday’s clash undoubtedly offers an opportunity for the German manager to rest a number of star players, while running the rule over his back-up options.
As such, in defence we’re likely to see a return for Dean Henderson between the posts as he takes David de Gea’s spot. Along the back four we can expect to see Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Aaron Wan-Bissaka take up their preferred positions.
“To start with, they (Donny Van de Beek & Dean Henderson) will both play in the first XI tomorrow. And, as you saw, Donny came on as a sub last Sunday.”Ralf Rangnick to Manchester Evening News
- It will be Henderson’s second appearance this term, having previously started the Carabao Cup third round defeat to West Ham United. The excellent form of David de Gea has kept him out of the XI, and he will be keen to impress Rangnick.
- There could be multiple changes to the backline. Aaron Wan-Bissaka should return to the line-up. Shaw could make his first appearance in four games after recovering from a head injury. Maguire looks set to be rested, with Matic being named temporary captain tonight. It should be a straightforward selection at the heart of the defence, with Eric Bailly coming in to partner Victor Lindelof.
- In midfield, Rangnick has opted for a narrow 4-2-2-2 formation, which means we’ll likely see a duo of Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic, with the latter stepping in for Fred. In front of them we could see a rare start for Donny van de Beek, alongside Jesse Lingard in two No.10 roles.
- Further forward, there could be a complete reshuffle with Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo potentially dropping to the bench for the game. Anthony Elanga could be handed a start alongside Mason Greenwood. The teenage Swede got 14 minutes off the bench against Crystal Palace last week while the latter made his comeback off the bench on Sunday with an assist and will be eager to make a mark tonight.
Predicted Formation: 4-2-2-2
Predicted Lineup: Henderson, Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Lindelof, Shaw, Matic, McTominay, Van De Beek, Lingard, Elanga, Greenwood.
The match will kick off 9:00pm WAT.
