Wolves defeat Manchester United at Old Trafford, Rangnick’s first defeat as United manager on Monday evening.

Eight minutes from time, Joao Moutinho scored the only goal to give Wolves a deserved victory at Old Trafford and ruin Ralf Rangnick’s unblemished start as temporary Manchester United manager.

Sa saved a curling free-kick from Bruno Fernandes, who had earlier fired against the crossbar when he should have done better.

The visitors dominated the first half-hour and were back on top by the time Moutinho scored, though the goal was unfortunate for United’s central defender Phil Jones, who was one of the better performers on his senior return after a near two-year absence due to injuries.

His clearing header fell to the 35-year-old midfielder on the edge of the area, and despite the fact that he hadn’t scored since February 2021, Moutinho kept his cool to drive a shot through a crowded penalty area and into the bottom corner.

Ronaldo was a subdued force, and given the boos that greeted his exit, United fans did not believe Mason Greenwood deserved to be substituted for Fernandes.

United were overrun in midfield in the early going and, as has been the case so often under Solskjaer, were left hoping for a flash of inspiration that never came.

The Wolves fans erupted at the final whistle, but it was a crushing blow for Rangnick, who saw his side drop to seventh in the Premier League, 22 points behind leaders Manchester City despite having played two fewer games.

Wolves, on the other hand, are now three points and one place behind Manchester United in eighth place.
