Manchester City tried to sign Romelu Lukaku
Romelu Lukaku joined Chelsea with a £97.5million transfer fee from Inter Milan in the summer, but his agent says his Premier League return could have been at Manchester City. The Citizens tried to sign the Chelsea striker when he was at Inter Milan last year, his agent revealed.
Lukaku joined Chelsea in the summer after a £97.5m move from Inter Milan, rejoining the club he left back in 2014. The 28-year-old has begun to settle back into life at Stamford Bridge under Thomas Tuchel, scoring four goals in 11 games this season.
But it seems his move back to the Premier League could have been very different, had Man City completed a deal for his services in 2020. Pep Guardiola’s side were planning for life after Sergio Aguero, and Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello has now revealed that City were considering making a move for the Belgian.
“I think I can say without disappointing anybody that Manchester City came in the year before,” Pastorello told the Telegraph. “During the pandemic, it was very complicated because of trying to fly to places to meet people. It started very concrete and very serious, but eventually, they changed their idea or they were not ready to make it happen. Honestly, it was very difficult after the first year – it was almost impossible. He hadn’t won the league with Inter and he wanted to do that, and it would have been really impossible. Then they [City] focussed on Harry Kane this summer.”
Previous season before moving to his current club, Lukaku scored 30 goals in 44 appearances and won the league with Inter Milan.
