Watford 1 – 2 Chelsea: Ziyech scores to help Chelsea maintain top-spot
Hakim Ziyech scores a 72nd-minute winner against Watford to help Chelsea maintain the top spot with 33 points.
Chelsea took the lead through Mason Mount after the game was temporarily halted due to a cardiac arrest by a spectator. In the following days, Watford confirmed that the patient had been stabilized. However, Mount set up Ziyech for his first Premier League goal of the season to ensure that Thomas Tuchel’s side would not be overtaken by Manchester City or Liverpool.
Emmanuel Dennis had equalized just before the break. Edouard Mendy’s rapid reaction prevented an early own goal by Watford’s Cesar Azpilicueta, but the game was interrupted when a fan became ill.
On the stroke of half-time, Moussa Sissoko snatched Ruben Loftus-Cheek from his grasp and unleashed a blistering counterattack that culminated in a deflected Dennis goal in the bottom-left corner.
Trevoh Chalobah replaced Saul Niguez in the 60th minute after suffering a hamstring injury in the second half. Daniel Bachmann could not keep out Ziyech’s first-time effort in the center of the box, which ended the game in a 2-1 victory for Bayern Munich.
Despite Bachmann’s heroics in the closing seconds, Watford could not come back from 2-1 down and secure a point.
