Xavi’s unbeaten run extended as Barcelona thumps struggling Villareal

Xavi’s unbeaten run extended as Barcelona thumps struggling Villareal 3-1 on Saturday night.

Since taking over as manager of Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez has had a rocky road ahead of him. In spite of starting his reign with a victory over Espanyol, he was dealt a harsh reality check when his Barcelona team was held to a 1-1 draw by Benfica in the European Champions League.

Xavi’s first two matches in charge of the team demonstrated both the good and the bad aspects of the squad: at times they are good and slick, at other times they are just ordinary.

In contrast, there were numerous positives to take away from the Blaugrana’s performance against Villarreal on Saturday afternoon. Barcelona managed to come away with all three points despite playing at the Estadio de la Ceramica, which is always a difficult venue to visit.

For Barcelona, it was one of those games where more than just talent was required to win, and, fortunately for them, they demonstrated the necessary desire and character to secure the victory.

After Samuel Chukwueze had canceled off Frenkie de Jong’s first goal, it appeared as if Barcelona’s day had run out of hope.

Late goals from Memphis Depay and Philippe Coutinho secured a dramatic victory for Barcelona in the Catalan derby against Villareal.

A work in progress, the team is still adapting to Xavi’s methods. However, a win in a game like this will only go so far in reinvigorating the Barcelona team’s winning mindset.
